The Grand Match

Scotland’s curlers are hoping to stage their first “Grand Match” in more than 30 years on the frozen surface of the Lake of Menteith near Aberfoyle.

The outdoor bonspeil, involving 2,000 curlers, is expected to go ahead next week.

Colin Grahamslaw, chief executive of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club, said:

“Seven inches of ice are needed for a Grand Match and the ice level is currently between five and six inches.

“There are 250 tonnes of people and stones – and whisky – on the ice when you have Grand Match,” he added. “It is going to be Monday or Tuesday of next week if it is going to happen.”
